Virtual Private Network (VPN)
A Virtual Private Network or VPN is a remote access service that creates a virtual connection between an internet user and a trusted network. A VPN is used to provide an additional layer of security for remote access or to provide a virtual presence on a network.

Mason currently operates an enterprise VPN based on Cisco’s Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA). It offers both VPN functions, providing a virtual presence to the general university community and secure access for designated staff to access select administrative systems.
VPN service for virtual presence is available to all university students, faculty, and staff.
Getting This Service
This service is limited to users who have approval to access Mason’s online systems and services remotely.
Cisco Secure Client
To access the VPN on university-managed computers (MESA or Jamf Pro), you will need to use the Cisco Secure Client. The client is available on all university-managed computers in the Software Center (MESA) or in Mason Self Service (Jamf Pro). See the Virtual Private Network service page for downloads.
If you are not using a university-managed computer, you will first need to download the Cisco Secure Client. Follow these instructions to ensure you have the Cisco Secure Client:
Once installed, enter your desired URL for your VPN group in the format “vpn.gmu.edu/”
Two-Factor Authentication
Mason uses Duo Security to deliver Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) when using your NetID and Patriot Pass Password to log in to Mason applications. Please see the Two-Factor (2FA) service page for more information, including how to get started with 2FA.
Mason Employees
If you do not know your specific VPN group or do not have one, you may enter “vpn.gmu.edu” and click Connect. Select “GENERAL” from the Group list and log in with your NetID and Patriot Pass Password. You will need to use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).
Students
If you do not know your specific VPN group or do not have one, you may enter “vpn.gmu.edu” and click Connect. Select “STUDENT” from the Group list and log in with your NetID and Patriot Pass Password. You will need to use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).
Special VPN Cases
In special cases, employees may require secure remote access to select administrative systems specific to their business unit or department. In this instance, employees should check with their technical point of contact for further details on VPN Groups. Non-employees requiring remote access must be sponsored by a Mason department or business unit and qualified by Human Resources. Upon qualification, accounts will be created for these individuals. Departments should engage their HR liaison to begin this process.
Wired & Wireless (Wi-Fi) Networks
Wired Network
To use the wired network, your device must have an ethernet interface and must be able to connect to an active jack in your workspace. Please contact your department’s IT Director or Technical Point of Contact to help get connected to the correct network. Please contact your Telecom Coordinator if you need to request a jack installation or activation. There is no charge to use an existing, active jack for wired network access. There may be a charge for the installation and activation of the new jack.
Wireless Network
Mason’s wireless (Wi-Fi) networks are designed to provide convenient and secure internet access in all academic, administrative, residential, recreational, and dining spaces across the campus. Wi-Fi networks are available to faculty, staff, students, their guests, and members of the eduroam federation.
Wi-Fi networks available to the university community:
- eduroam (education roaming) is the preferred network for academic and administrative use at George Mason University. It is an encrypted Wi-Fi network open to all guests who are members of the eduroam federation. Faculty, staff, and students can connect to eduroam across campus and in participating libraries, universities, and research institutions throughout the world. ITS recommends configuring your devices to join this network.
Guest Wi-Fi
Guest Wi-Fi is available for non-eduroam guests in academic and administrative (non-residence Hall) buildings.
- Guest Wi-Fi (MASON) is an unencrypted Wi-Fi network targeted for use by visitors and guests only.
How to Connect to Guest Wi-Fi
Device Registration
ITS recommends that students, faculty, and staff, when possible, configure wired and wireless network devices to join eduroam. Unfortunately, some consumer electronics devices, such as gaming consoles, printers, and smart TVs, are not 802.1x capable and require alternative authentication. To solve this problem, students, faculty, and staff may register up to 5 devices via mydevices.gmu.edu to access the Wi-Fi network.
Additional instructions are available at How to Register a Device for Network Access.
Policy
All users of the George Mason University network must adhere to University Policy Number 1301: Responsible Use of Computing and ITS Information Technology Security Standard.
Faculty and Staff members must also adhere to University Policy Number 2202: Flexible Work.
