Manage 2FA

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is used along with your NetID and Patriot Pass Password to provide extra security for your personal information and Mason’s by helping to verify only you are logging into your account.

Note: 2FA is required for all Mason users, whether student or employee.

Key Features

What is 2FA?

2FA helps secure accounts by using two factors:

  • The first factor (something you know) is your Mason NetID and Patriot Pass Password
  • The second factor (something you have) is generally a smartphone, but other options are available. Mason uses Duo Security for 2FA

Activating 2FA

Getting Started Checklist

You will need a phone with a valid number to enroll in 2FA. Follow the instructions below based on the type of device you will be using:

Note: For security reasons, your university phone number cannot be used to enroll in 2FA and your 2FA device cannot be shared with other users.

Updating 2FA

If you get a new smartphone, you will need to activate DUO on it. Follow the instructions below to set up 2FA once you have a new device:

Using 2FA

Once 2FA is set up, you will log in to applications by entering your NetID and Patriot Pass Password (first factor) and then confirm your identity using a physical device (second factor). The physical device may be a smartphone, tablet, Bypass Code, or Yubikey (See the List of Authentication Options).
